Krill Oil Cholesterol Study Brings Breakthrough Results

Doctors prove it! The uniqueness of krill oil - nature's one-of-a-kind cocktail of life-giving phospholipids, omega-3 fatty acids and diverse antioxidants - offers a superior approach to reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease(CVD) 1,2:.

High LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, and high triglycerides have long been called a major risk factor for heart attack and stroke3. And years before the landmark krill oil study, the American Heart Association and medical professionals everywhere were recommending supplementation with omega-3 EPA and DHA fatty acids from fish oil to reduce the CVD risks.

Updated American Heart Association recommendations4 published in November 2002 stated: "...research shows that all omega-3 fats have cardioprotective benefits, especially those in fish. Although the mechanisms responsible for omega-3 fatty acids' reduction of CVD risk are still being studied, research has shown:

  • Decreased risk of sudden death and arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat)
  • Decreased thrombosis (blood clot)
  • Decreased triglyceride (blood fat) levels
  • Decreased growth of atherosclerotic plaque
  • Improved arterial health
  • Lower blood pressure"

But Wait! Did You Notice Anything Missing?

What about LDL and HDL cholesterol? If they are related to heart health, and if fish oil is recommended for heart health, then isn't it supposed to support healthy cholesterol levels? That seems to have been easily taken for granted by a public saturated with years of heart-healthy fish oil advertising. But here's what a group of Mayo Clinic researchers found after assembling the results of countless studies5. After confirming that fish oil is "scientifically proven to significantly reduce blood triglyceride levels... the higher the dose, the greater the reduction," they also reported as follows:

  • Fish Oil Effect on HDL (Good) Cholesterol: Omega-3 fish oil supplements "appear to cause small improvements by 1-3%."
  • Fish Oil Effect on LDL (Bad) Cholesterol: Increases (worsening) of LDL cholesterol levels "by 5-10% are also observed."

The Mayo Clinic report concludes: "Therefore, for individuals with high blood levels of total cholesterol or low-density lipoprotein (LDL), significant improvements will not likely be seen, and a different treatment should be selected."

So Here's That "Different Treatment"

Enter the krill: a tiny marine organism in the form of Neptune Krill Oil (NKO™) capsules. Unlike fish oil or anything else in nature or in science, krill oil contains a superior (phospholipid) form of omega-3 fatty acids plus the super-antioxidant astaxanthin which is 48 times more powerful than the antioxidants in fish oil. These unique nutrients make the essential fatty acids in krill oil 95-98% bioavailable to your cells (vs. fish oil at 61-65%).

The effects of NKO™ compared to fish oil, statin drugs only, and a placebo were assessed in a 90-day, double blind, randomized trial by doctors affiliated with McGill University and the University of Montreal. The results were published in the December 2004 Alternative Medicine Review2. Study subjects consisted of 120 patients with mild to moderate hyperlipidemia (high blood fats) who could maintain a healthy diet. They were randomly assigned to one of four groups, and Group A and B dosages were based on patients' Body Mass Index (BMI).

  • Group A patients took (depending on BMI) 1 or 1.5 grams/day of NKO™ containing 150 mg EPA and 90 mg DHA omega-3 essential fatty acids
  • Group B patients took (depending on BMI) 2 or 3 grams/day of NKO™
  • Group C took 3 grams/day of fish oil containing (180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA)
  • Group D took a placebo

65 of the patients had already been on a 10mg/day statin regimen for at least six months, and continued their statins throughout the study.

1-3 grams NKO™ daily proved significantly more effective than statins alone, and significantly more effective than 3 g/day fish oil for:

  • reducing total cholesterol
  • reducing LDL ("bad") cholesterol
  • reducing triglycerides
  • increasing HDL ("good") cholesterol
  • reducing blood glucose

Equal doses of 3 grams/day fish oil vs. krill oil produced results that speak for themselves:

Dosage 3g/d Fish Oil % Change Krill Oil % Change
Total cholesterol -5.88% -17.90%
LDL -4.56% -39.15%
HDL +4.22% +59.64%
Triglycerides -3.15% -26.51%

Comparisons between 3 grams/day fish oil and 1 gram/day krill oil revealed these changes:

3g vs. 1g/d Changes Fish Oil 3g/d % Krill Oil 1g/d %
Total cholesterol -5.88% -13.44%
LDL -4.56% -32.03%
HDL +4.22% +43.92%
Triglycerides -3.15% -11.03%

Patients on 1 g and 1.5 g daily krill oil continued for another 90 days with a low maintenance dose of 0.5 g krill oil daily, yielding equally spectacular results compared to statins only and fish oil.
