How to Take Krill Oil

How Much Should You Take?

Krill oil is non-toxic and has been proven safe at dosages as high as 10 grams per day but a typical dose is 1-3 grams daily depending on your body mass and why you're taking it.

Two Meptune Krill Oil NKO™ softgels contain one gram of pure, wonderful, exceptionally effective, endlessly beneficial Antarctic krill oil. Dr. Tina Sampalis, Vice President of Research and Development for Neptune Technologies and Bioresources Inc., offers these dosage suggestions:

  • If you're petite: start with a loading dose of 2 gelcaps (1 gram) per day for the first 2 weeks, then 1 gelcap (500 mg)/day for maintenance.
  • If you're of average weight: a loading dose 3 gelcaps (1.5 grams)/day for the first 14-30 days, then 2 gelcaps (1 gram)/day for maintenance.
  • If you're larger with a Body Mass Index (BMI) under 33: 3 gelcaps (1.5 grams)/day for the first 30 days, then 2 gelcaps (1 gram)/day.
  • If your BMI is over 33, 3 gelcaps (1.5 grams)/day continuously.

As mentioned, dosage recommendations are also condition-specific. For example:

  • Cholesterol Study Dosages. In a randomized 3-month study, 120 patients with blood cholesterol levels between 194-348 mg/dL were given a BMI-dependent daily dosage of 2-3 g NKO™ (Group A); 1.1-5g/day (Group B); and 3g/day fish oil containing 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA per gram (Group C). At both lower and equal doses, NKO™ was significantly more effective than fish oil for the reduction of glucose, triglyceride and LDL levels.
  • Chronic Inflammation Study Dosages. A 30-day, randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted to evaluate the effects of NKO™ on C-reactive protein (CRP) in 90 patients with high CRP and chronic inflammation due to cardiovascular disease and/or rheumatoid arthritis and/or osteoarthritis. Group A received 300 mg NKO™ daily and Group B, the placebo. Study results clearly indicated that only 300 mg NKO™ daily significantly inhibits inflammation and reduces arthritic symptoms within a short treatment period of 7-14 days.

These and other scientifically-validated results have shown that NKO™ delivers more benefits in lower dosages than fish oil because of its unique ingredients and near-100% absorption at the cellular level.

When Should You Take It?

Best time is right before your first meal of the day (and again before lunch if you're dosing more than 1 gram). While taking it on an empty stomach is perfectly okay, you'll absorb more of it with food because its phospholipids help the body to emulsify and absorb the omega-3 fatty acids.

Unless you're a night worker, don't take it at night, because krill oil will most likely start giving you a noticeable energy boost after the first week or so.
