Prostate Health: Can Fish Oil Help?

As you probably know, all men experience prostate enlargement as they age, and far too many face the ultimate possibility of prostate cancer. Here's what we found about the fish oil and the prostate.

On March 7, 2006, the British Journal of Cancer published the results of a small laboratory study where omega-3 actually stopped the spread of prostate cancer cells by blocking the effects of omega 6!

Principal investigator Noel Clarke said "Some tumors develop slowly in the prostate without producing symptoms and sometimes when symptoms do develop, it is because the cancer has already spread. Eating a diet with the right balance of omega 3 and omega 6 fat may well help to keep prostate cancer within the prostate gland." Clarke said his research group believes that "tumors may exploit omega 6 fats as a high energy source, giving them the energy they need to maintain a high growth rate and to create important signaling molecules." (Note that omega-3 fights inflammation, and omega-6 creates inflammation.)

It's well known that omega-6 is considered a major cause of inflammatory diseases such as arthritis, heart disease and more. It's also known that the typical American diet contains excessive amounts of omega 6 and that most Americans are severely deficient on omaga-3. Could this be triggering the rise in prostate disorders and even prostate cancer deaths?

Unfortunately the answer is still not clear. Large population studies are needed. However, lead study author Mick Brown of the Paterson Institute said "Omega 6 fats, found in vegetable oils, nuts and seeds, increased the spread of tumor cells into bone marrow. The invasion was blocked by omega 3 fats - the ones found in fish. It is possible to have a healthy balance of the two types of fat that will stop the cancer from spreading."

But now the problem is that the typical ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 in fish oil supplements is 2:1 or 3:1 - hardly enough omega-3 to substantially overcome the inflammatory action of omega-6. Most fish oil supplements contain too much omega 6.

Krill Oil Can Do Better.

Krill oil is an entirely unique and superior new form of omega 3 with many unusual advantages including a rational balance of omega 3/6. In particular, the leading brand, Neptune Krill Oil (NKO™) has a ratio of 15 parts omega-3 to 1 part omega-6. That makes it a powerful inflammation-fighter as already proven in clinical studies of its effect on inflammation throughout the body.

What's more, krill oil is a hormone regulator, and because prostate and breast cancer are hormone-sensitive cancers, some exciting future studies using NKO™ are on the horizon.

The prostate is only one of many areas of human health that may be supported by krill oil. NKO™ is the leading brand. It's sold by various companies under different names, but if it's made by Neptune, you'll see the NKO trademark on the label. Check out the rest of this site for lots of information about the many exciting benefits. Then put the health-giving whole food goodness of krill oil to work as a daily staple for yourself and those you care about starting now!
